Is it possible to find love on social media?

Do you think you can find your one and the "only" in social networking sites?

Different people have different misconceptions about the perfect place to find true love. Some believe that it depends on a person’s ideas on love matters, others feel it depend on the ideal partner you're looking for, while others believe that you can find love anywhere.

My question is, do you believe that a person can find a soulmate on these social networking sites? I’ll give a scenario on a relationship developed on social media and moved to the next level.

From a recent post on Tuko News, a particular lady who was said to be from Nigeria amazed citizens after conducting a wedding ceremony in which a framed photo of him represented the groom. It is said that the two met on Facebook, and after a series of conversations, the two agreed to do a wedding. The man sent money for the ceremony, sent his picture, and claimed that he would be occupied working abroad.

This story is quite weird, but yes, it happened, and people could not hide their shock. The bride was seen smiling and posing with the photo of her lover during the photography session.

From the above story, many people in the reactions and comments session said that this is an act of desperation and obsession; others felt that there could be a problem with one of the parties. Others said that there must be an untold story from the man’s side as no sane person would think of such a crazy thing.

In as much as some people succeed in finding true love that lasts on social media, most people end up being scammed and living miserable lives afterward. We also hear of reported cases where some may eliminate their “lovers” found in social media. People you’ve not met face to face before can easily fake their identity. When you meet them after sometimes, you may fail to hide your frustration about them being the opposite of what they portrayed during online interactions.

Love is a sweet thing

Even with the fact that social media is meant for interactions and connections, people should focus on getting to know others in depth. Most people may fail to portray their authentic characters during online interactions to win a person they are targeting.

With the use of modern interactions patterns, it is pretty tricky to tell the real feeling of another person from the other end. For example, using emoji to respond, a person could use sad ๐Ÿ˜” emoji with drooping faces, but in reality, they could be laughing on the other side. Different people use different expressions through emoji, and the other person could be a victim of misinterpreting messages.

I also feel that it can become problematic for a person to commit to their words for the people they interact with online; they might not be willing to sacrifice, compromise or even forgive a person they meet online. This could be because they might feel that they do not owe such individuals loyalty or trust.

To sum it up, there is a need for good communication regardless of the purpose of the relationship, whether dating, friendships, or other purposes. If your intention of finding your lover is true, then nature will be fair enough to make it happen. However, it would be best to embrace transparent communication with trust because there is no tool to mend broken trust.
